Kathleen Durham, born in rural Pennsylvania attended a one room school house, and later, a small town high school. As a small child she began copying her coloring books, learning to draw and paint any way she could. As a teenager, there were some art classes in school, but no painting classes. She took a correspondence course, which her parents could not really afford. Her skills improved, but, this did not fulfill her need to paint!
Kathleen married young and went with her husband, Earle, who was in the Army Airborne, after that, it was back to Pennsylvania, they had two wonderful children, Earle L. and Kay, and a good life. They moved to Florida in 1964. Still no art classes around. So she went to cosmetology school.
Then one glorious day when her children were in grade school, Adult Education started at their school. They came home with the brochure, she was thrilled to see, "Oil Painting Class!" Kathleen was the first to sign up!
"It was so wonderful to learn to paint at last, how to use the paint, brushes, and mediums." She studied with Jack Morton, in Land O' Lakes, Florida, for six years, enjoying every minute! "I hope Jack can look down from heaven and realize the gift he gave me, and can enjoy my successes."
Kathleen's family then moved to New Jersey, and the search was on for classes once again. After several years of Adult Education Classes, she discovered a well known New Jersey artist/teacher, Eleanor Morehouse, and studied with her for seven years. Kathleen found a whole world of expression, "I owe so much to Eleanor, she opened my world. I then began showing and selling my work on a regular basis. The day a judge told me I would have to enter in the professional category I flipped!" This was a dream come true! Kathleen's paintings are on display in private collections throughout the United States.
Kathleen and her husband traveled extensively, and she paints from her own photography, as well as from her clients favorite photo. She paints Pet Portraits, Horses, House Portraits, Buildings, Landscapes, Seascapes, Gardens, Floral's, or what ever is requested.
Kathleen began Teaching in the New Jersey Adult Education Program, and also gave private lessons. "It felt so good to pass my skills on to others who had always wanted to paint!"
Having moved back to Florida after her husband retired, she is teaching several art classes and showing her work in many venues. Kathleen has won many awards and has been a member of several art organizations, but the most rewarding is to share her talent with others and to help them see the world through an artists eyes.
"When traveling, it is not always possible to paint on location, so I try to absorb the scene, and the light source, and the sounds in my memory bank for later use, along with my photographs."
" I have been showing my work as a professional since 1990, in public buildings, such as banks, libraries, municipal buildings, hospitals, city hall, as well as mall art shows and many outdoor art festivals, and galleries. My biggest thrill was to be in an art show at The Javits Center in New York City."
"I have won many awards over the years, which I will not list, as they won't mean anything to the viewer, but, they are treasures to me.
I have cut back on art shows as I am sort of retired, still teach two classes a week, and do a show now and then. Mostly I do commission work now as it is allot easier and I love painting something that really means something to the client.
I will list some of my private collectors, as they are very special to me!"
